On June 23, 2011, Deborah Love, J.D., M.A., led a meeting at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem, NC, to initiate a planning process for a state-wide network of health care ethics committees and consultants in North Carolina. The meeting brought together veterans from four precedent NC networks (the Coastal Ethics Network, the Western NC Ethics Network, the Piedmont Ethics Network and the Bioethics Resource Network based in Charlotte) and clinical ethicists from four NC university-based bioethics centers (UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, East Carolina University and Wake Forest University), and was hosted by the Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Initial plans call for a state-wide needs assessment study of health care institutions to be completed by Jan, 2012, a stakeholder-based organizational planning process in the Spring of 2012, an organizational launch in Fall of 2012, and an initial state-wide network conference in 2013.
