UNC Center for Bioethics is pleased to see our core faculty member Jill Fisher, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2022 Donald W. Light Award for Applied or Public Practice of Medical Sociology for her book Adverse Events: Race, Inequality, and the Testing of New Pharmaceuticals. The Donald W. Light award is given out by the American Sociological Association every two years to a book or publication that expertly applies the concepts and methods of medical sociology to relevant, contemporary issue of significance.

A deep dive into the social inequality inherent to drug trials, Dr. Fisher’s book Adverse Events covers the racial and economic commonalities among healthy volunteers and explores what that means for social justice and public health. The book offers an uncommon yet vital perspective on intersectionality in medicine. Congratulations Dr. Fisher on this well-deserved recognition!
