Margaret Waltz, PhD, is a Research Associate in the Department of Social Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She received her PhD in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University where she researched patients’ experiences of waiting in medical waiting rooms and how medical institutions structure patients’ time. She then served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the UNC Center for Genomics and Society and the Center for Bioethics.
Dr. Waltz studies the ethical and social issues that emerge as a result of developments in genomic technologies, population and clinical genomic screening, and the receipt of genetic and genomic results. She has worked closely on provider/patient and researcher/participant experiences in situations of uncertainty or ethical dilemmas, and she also has studied how gender inequalities are perpetuated within and by medical institutions. Dr. Waltz is currently a member of UNC’s Hospital Ethics Committee.
