Sara Scarlet.MD

Medical Resident, General Surgery

Sara has a strong interest in surgical ethics. Her interests were piqued by her clinical work as a trainee and her personal experiences with the health care system. Early in her training, she became an advocate for improving the communication practices of surgeon trainees regarding critical illness, end-of-life care, and high stakes decision making. Sara has been an active member of the Hospital Ethics Committee (HEC) since July 2016. Beginning in July 2017, she will complete a year of bioethics training at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. In addition to her fellowship at MacLean, Sara will work with the lead consultants for the ethics consultation service and conduct clinical ethics education and research projects related to her areas of interest: moral distress amongst health care providers, the ethics of health care for incarcerated patients, and ethics education for surgeon trainees.
