Dr. Michelson is Professor of Pediatrics, Julia and David Uihlein Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities, Director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, and Chief Ethics Officer for the Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Michelson is also an attending physician in the division of pediatric critical care medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Michelson’s research interests include communication, decision making, palliative care, bereavement, and bioethics. She has done work to develop and assess strategies for improving communication and decision making among patients, family caregivers, and professional caregivers in the pediatric intensive care unit. Currently, Dr. Michelson is working on a study of interventions to improve access to bereavement support for people after the death of a child. Dr. Michelson’s work uses qualitative and quantitative methods as well as patient/community/collaborator engagement and community-engaged participatory research methods. Dr. Michelson’s research has been funded by the NIH, PCORI, the National Palliative Research Center, the American Cancer Society, the Greenwall Foundation, and others. She has published her work in journals such as JAMA and New England Journal of Medicine and contributed to high-profile news outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Hill, and Stat News.
