Wednesday, June 11, 2025
Noon-1:30PM ET
We are delighted to host a lecture and conversation with Dr. John Z. Sadler, (Director of the University of Texas Southwestern Program in Ethics in Science & Medicine, Professor of Psychiatry, Daniel W. Foster M. D. Professor of Medical Ethics and Distinguished Teaching Professor.)
Title: Contemplating Vice and Psychiatric Diagnosis – An Introductory Overview
Abstract: In this lecture, Dr. Sadler provides a brief overview of his book, Vice and Psychiatric Diagnosis, describing its wide scope and sketching the historical, clinical, and cultural reach of the work. In brief, the book and the lecture address the general problem of why some mental disorder categories are vice-laden (e.g., involved wrongful or criminal conduct), while most mental disorder categories involve illness values, like distress, disability, impairment, and pain. The story of this problem turns out to be a major undertaking in understanding Western culture and history, and Sadler’s overview touches upon highlights of his findings and the provocative conclusions and prescriptions for the future of social welfare.
